Bill-Payment Kiosk

A bill payment kiosk is a machine used to pay bills, usually located in a high traffic area like a shopping mall. Each bill payment kiosk can be programmed for either one specific biller, or for several different billers. For example, a bill payment kiosk can be programmed for the water company only, or it can be programmed for several utilities, the water, electric, phone, and natural gas companies. Each bill payment kiosk can accept payments, look up billers and amount due, scan bills when available and show details on the screen, and print receipts for consumers.

A bill payment kiosk is similar to an ATM in appearance. It has a durable hard plastic shell that houses a computer and Internet connection. Sometimes a phone is available to users if assistance is needed. Detailed, easy to follow instructions are located either on the screen of the computer, or printed and posted near the screen. A magnetic card reader, and a cash receptor, as well as a check reader are all available to consumers on the bill payment kiosk. A bar code scanner is available to customers who have the printed bill readily available, or the bill payment kiosk’s Internet connection can help the customer look up the biller and total amount due.

Bill payment kiosks can be found in many places. Typically placed in areas with high levels of foot traffic, bill payment kiosks can be found in shopping malls, lobbies, hotels, airports, convenience stores, retailers, outside the place of business, and other places frequented by the public. Providing a bill payment kiosk allows customers to check and pay bills after regular business hours. The convenient locations are also beneficial to customer service. Consumers are able to pay bills and have a printed receipt without standing in long lines at hard to find payment centers.
